So I heard about this new movie that's coming out. It's about a woman who gets into a relationship with a guy who is, despite the hot sex, a bit on the clingy side. When she tries to dump him, the guy makes her life hell with what can only be described as "super powers". He throws a shark into her apartment, destroys her car and other bits of property, and directly threatens her life until she gets back together with him. Quite terrifying, no?"

Oh, wait, I switched the genders by accident.

Seriously, how can anyone think this crap is comedy? It's abuse made trivial.

For the same reason Ultimate Fighting Champion is a smash hit, for the same reason people continue to watch television, despite its mind-numbing stupidity, for the same reason people reject freely-given education.

Slipknot wrote a song about it, it's called "People = Shit".

This is why I watch cartoons. They have more intelligence in one of Optimus Prime's cheesy lines than they do in the whole of reality TV.

Yeah, that's one I can bear to live without.

The posters for it are up all over the theater. I want to take a sledgehammer to them.

reasons people will get away with this movie:
1. it's a woman, beating up a man, surprisingly people think this form of relationship abuse isn't as bad...
2. It's uma thurman, she's allowed to kick ass on a regular basis (after kill bill).
3. it's got a shark.

I'm only playing devil's advocate here, so don't kill me, I have no intention of seeing the movie.... it doesn't look very good.....
reason # 4. there aren't very many good movies anymore, so they just make more mediocre ones.

They have some very good cartoons this year. I don't think there'll be any good "adult" movies until Dead Man's Chest comes out.

1. It demeans men abused by women. It happens and it isn't funny.

2. ...eh.

3. The shark does not make up for it.

the devil wears prada will be VERY good. and funny... but no sharks or snakes.
SNAKES ON A PLANE!! we should get costumes ready for that premiere. ^^

Costumes of what, snakes or planes?

both?
or we could be planes, with snakes attached.
it would be fun.

I'd watch an average OVA before I'd watch an average Hollywood movie.

I dunno, I've thought this sounded pretty funny. Granted, I didn't really look at it from the abuse angle, but more of a "people with super-powers being kinda petty/like real people."

Besides, is it really "abuse" so much as "payback" or even "mischief?" Are people not allowed to be uncivil to each other without calling it abuse?

She threatened to kill him, several times.

Think about it this way: if it was a male doing that to a female, would it be funny?

Hard to say; treated right even mayhem, maiming, and murder can be funny (say, for example, the dismembering of the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail). Should the genders of the parties involved really matter?

I will grant, however, that there's something of a double standard involved here. I may wait until I actually see trailers for the thing before I make any final judgement.

Monty Python is different. They do it well. And I've already seen the trailers.

And genders do matter because this would not be hilarious if a female was being pursued by an agressive and potentially homicidal male.

I did watch one trailer, after taking a couple minutes to track it down. It did not seem especially funny, but by the same token, I wasn't offended by it.

I do not believe abuse is funny and I do recognize that it can happen to anyone, male or female, from any source. I'm just not certain what's being shown in the movie qualifies as abuse.

A different question, then. If a female was being pursued by an agressive and potentially homicidal male, would it be funny if "funny" things kept happening to him in the persuit of his homicide? Such as getting flattened by what whatever he intended to use on the woman?

As the male is being portrayed as the bad guy in this scenario (also known as the Wiley E. Coyote setup), then it would be more funny.

Is that not how she is portrayed in this film?

From: [identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com
Nope. The male "victim" is the one being punished, not the enraged superfemale.

You know how you tear the person's ticket stub and say, "Thank you and enjoy the show?" -- oh, wait, no, you say "Thank you, it's the third one on the left," or whatever ...

you say "Thank you and enjoy the show" when ushering for a play, hm. I was wondering if you could say, "Thank you and enjoy the sexism."

So was the director male or female? Producers? Script writers? Meh. I guess they keep lowering the bar for movies, which is why I go see a (really good) movie maybe once or twice a year.

I'm concessions. I hope to god I don't say, "Would you like sexism on your popcorn?"
