Dear internet and everyone else going flail over Disney buying Marvel:

These are the same people who owned Dimension Films at the time it produced the Sin City movie. Yes, the one with the hookers and the guns and the swearing and the decapitations and Frank Miller's sticky fingerprints all over it. I very much doubt they're going to try castrating the Punisher to make him more kid friendly.

Chill out and go play some Kingdom Hearts or something.

Sincerely,

Someone who should be doing her homework.

P.S.: You can keep going with the crossover fanart, though.

OTOH, the number of people whose primary reaction to this seems to be "Marvel in KH3 zomg!!!11!!1!" is a bit disconcerting too. Kingdom Hearts: the willitblend.com of fandom?

*brb, dying of lol*

I'm not sure it would quite fit...but then again, that's what they said about Disney and Final Fantasy and look where we are.

It was a serious point, though. I'm a bit surprised that nobody's looking past "oh, more merchandise and KH3!" to consider genuine potential downsides of this. I'm not saying I expect to see the Punisher patting small children on the head, obviously. What I am a mite concerned about is that Marvel has always had a habit of printing many bad ideas to one good one, financially speaking, and using big property like Spidey and X-Men to cover the costs of any number of little characters (really, look at that lot!) who hang around on the periphery. My main fear is that Disney will look at that, see a model that doesn't on the face of it look too smart, and tell the creative team to focus on the known, marketable moneymakers and put less into everything else. Which will result in stagnation, bored fans, and fewer up-and-coming young superheroes for audiences to potentially latch on to - and in the long run, that won't pay off. (Although it's arguable that Marvel are quite capable of making that mistake on their own, of course. >.> )

And on another tack, the whole "but Disney own Miramax/Sin City/Kill Bill!" argument isn't really the point. That subdivision isn't the first thing you think of when someone says Disney, let's face it. The first thing you think of, almost certainly, is cartoon mice, animated princesses, theme park rides, and maybe PotC. Or Fantasia, or Kingdom Hearts, or whichever was your favourite/whichever your younger friends and relatives subjected you to the most.

But still, you think of bright colours, young audiences, and a certain... rather forced wholesomeness. There may even be Elton John songs in the background. I'm not saying that that's all there is to Disney, since it obviously isn't - but that's the public image of Disney, the Disney brand if you will, and I can see why that doesn't rest too comfortably in the same bed as Marvel, or at least some sections of Marvel. I think most people who are really upset are reacting on a gut level without knowing quite why - but I suspect that what's actually upsetting their guts, is that. And I can sympathise with it, to be honest.

And on a final note, one thing I haven't seen ANYONE ask yet - does this mean Disney now own Gen 1? Or at least its comic iteration? O_O

Considering we already have a Mickey Mouse Transformer...

I understand the gut reaction, but at the same time I don't feel it's connected to any degree of rationality. Even under the Disney name Disney's come up with some weird shit (Bambi's mom's death, Pirates of the Caribbean, Nightmare Before Christmasn, Chernabog, not to mention whatever the fuck this is.). It's associated with wholesomeness up front, but at the core it's associated with money. And pissing off their fanbase means less money, as you'd think Marvel would know by now.

I don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to Fantasia, I will admit that. >.>

Fantasia had harpy nipples. Half a second of harpy nipples, but still.
