Thank goodness it's my bro's last day here. I have not been able to stand twenty minutes with him, between the tantrums, the whining, and the babbling about random things that I don't care about.
Anyway, so now my in-depth analysis of "The Ant Bully".
First off, the movie would be a lot better without the gratuitous toilet humor. It was unnecessary and decadent. Secondly, I admit the bullying scene at the beginning was necessary to show Lucas' level of isolation and dislike of his peers, but the bit at the end where he rallied the other bullies against the big one was just...stupid.
Now, on to the ants. I'm using "ANTZ" and "A Bug's Life" as comparisons here.
The emphasis on the unity of the colony vs isolation as opposed to the typical conformity vs uniquenss was an interesting bit, as well as the queen as a seperate entity instead of the love interest. But what really intrigued me was the ritual and religion of the colony. They have art, worship a mother deity, and have their own legends as opposed to simply aping human behavior. I like that.
The ants obviously had some sort of tattooing or body art on them, symbolism unknown. There's gender differentiation with an apparent connection to whether they have those odd mandible things on their face. My theory is that they're either removed when an ant decides to be 'female', or some form of mutation that leads to the ant considering herself 'female'.
Being sentient, they can form romantic relationships, although I doubt Zog and Hova can ever get more intimate than cuddling or tickling. Mating with the queen is most likely considered an act of devotion and duty as opposed to love.
The structure appears more complex than those of nonsentient ants, with a council of older ants handing down decisions and the castes being considered equal by most (except Lovak, but that's him being an idiot). Zog considers himself a wizard, but he appears to be a worker than simply found a different sort of calling. He's probably done good things for the colony before, so the council lets him work on his own.
All in all, quite interesting as compared to other ant movies. More if I think of it.
