A note here--no pictures were actually taken during the service. Due to Shabbat regulations I couldn't take them until after the sun went down and we did havdalah. Anything seen here is a recreation. I did also have some pictures of David doing the practice service but I can't find where I put them right now.

Photobucket

The badass of the moment in his suit and dinosaur tie.. Please note the personally designed tallit with hand-lettered tallit-donning prayer on the top edge, cheetah-print trim, and iron-on transfer prehistoric animal patches against a hand-painted backdrop.

Photobucket

David at the torah reading podium, looking nice and official.

Photobucket

Less official.

Photobucket

David with his tutor Anna, who is also made of all the win in the world.

Photobucket

David's talit bag, made by Anna's mother and kept under wraps until the event. The drawing is David's, it's just ironed onto the cloth.

Photobucket

The inside of the bag, which has a picture of "his sloth", presumably in honor of Sid the Sloth.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

They've started up a tradition of putting a small display from the __ mitzvah of the moment up in the lobby. This was David's. He designed, drew and wrote up all of it, although I think the actual arranging was someone else.

Photobucket

My granma. You have no idea how hard it is to get her to smile in pictures. If you're going to pay good money for teeth, show them off!

Photobucket

Granma talking to David's tutor's grandmother, having found one of the few people in the room who can't just get up and walk away. They did actually seem to get along--I think it's a grandmother thing.

Photobucket

Hugs! Yes, that's my weird Chinese shirt-coat-thing. It was one of the few things Mom would let me wear to services.

Photobucket

I'm not even sure what I was doing here. Possibly a Sailor Moon impression. Kate wanted to play with my camera and just told me to strike a pose.

Photobucket

And the party. Ish. It was mostly a light dinner and then some music off David's iPod.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Please note the elegant stuffed animal displays on the tables.

Photobucket

The lame people's table. They did not dance.

Photobucket

David's friend David P. (second from right, red tie), imported from Birmingham for the occasion. playing Uno with his family.

Photobucket

Photobucket

His mom made bar mitzvah cookies. There are talit-clad boys, chais, torahs, and for some reason pumpkins and acorns.

Photobucket

Me and David dancing. Apologies for the blurriness of some of these, people were moving around a lot.

Photobucket

What was left of the buffet by the time I could start taking pictures. The main course was mac and cheese, as per request of the bar mitzvah boy.

Photobucket

David demonstrates the proper way to "Walk the Dinosaur".

Photobucket

Dancing with one of his caregivers.

Photobucket

Dancing, with a cameo by the back of the little German kid who just figured out he had working legs and ran up and down the aisle the entire time waving a program around.

Photobucket

More dancing with Mom and Anna.

Photobucket

Photobucket

And of course, the traditional chair lifting.

Not really relevant, but I took some pictures of the sukkah outside because it looked nice.

I do like my coat. ^_^ One of the few actual nice clothes I have.

The pink haired woman is the Reform rabbi's daughter (not our rabbi, he was home sick with something dreadful). I didn't have but two words with her, but she's got a hell of a handshake.

Not sure how the brownies tasted, I stuck to the eclairs and the cookies.

I have a brownie curse. People always eat them before I can. B|

I would assume if she's a rabbi's daughter she'd have to be Reform; I may be going off of stereotype here but I can't imagine a more traditional letting their daughter have hair like that. :) (Then again, I don't have much experience with non-Reform; hell, I was in a temple with a female Rabbi for a bit!)

And seriously, where did you get that coat? *paws*

We have a ton of brownies. So many leftovers... O_o

Reform is pretty open about...everything. I caught a glimpse of the daughter coming in the door, she's got Hebrew letters tattooed on the back of her neck. She was moving too quick for me to read them, though. ...and the Reform rabbi is female. :p She's situated directly behind the pink hair, you can just barely see her.

Mom bought it for me in San Francisco years and years ago.

You know, comparitively, Reform kind of reminds me of the pot-smoking hippy. "Just chill, man, it's all good."

and obv. you should send me brownies while I mourn and search the internet for shiny jackets. There's a couple ethnic stores around with a lot of eastern/indian stuff, but...stuff is delicate and expensive. I got a top back in...Feb, March maybe? It's falling apart :< then again it did say handwash so that's mostly my bad...

They really are.

This one I don't wear often, so it lasts pretty long. Although one of the clasp things at the top has come unraveled and fallen off.

Try checking ebay for cool Asian clothes. I've gotten stuff directly from China such as art, clothes, jewelry, etc;. The shipping is often more than the item! I liked Anna's jacket too. Pictures do not do her justice- she looked fabulous!

Love the tie! What does the hebrew on the tallit say?

Has David ever read a book called "The Science of God?" It's written by a Rabbai and it talks about God and Creation and Evolution. It's not a difficult read -- I bet he'd like it. If he's not, it will be my gift.

Transliterates to "Baruch atah Adonai eloheynu melech ha-olam asher kideshanu b'mitzvotah vitzivanu l'hitatef ba-tzitzit" and translates to "Blessed are you, Lord our G0d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to wrap ourselves with tzitzit."

David's reading preferences tend to be a ways below his physical age--or his mental age, for that matter. He likes books with lots of pictures and I think he doesn't so much care about the theology of the matter as he does getting to talk about his own interests. It's a lovely thought but he probably wouldn't care for it.

Never met a fossil I didn't like! - I have. It was this fossil you had to lift to see what it was? It was poo.

And I'm glad there was a pic of SOMEONE walking the dinosaur, but I'd hoped it'd be you XD Your brother was second choice anyway. But still.

I like the top <3

I couldn't very well take the picture if I was walking the dinosaur myself, could I? *grins*

What is family for if not taking pics we don't want taken?

Also, I never noticed the tie until other people mentioned it. it actually is pretty awesome. As are the biscuits!

True, I haven't seen what Dad took. But the walking of the dinosaur was right after havdalah, I don't think we even had our cameras yet.

Biscuits?

Also David wants to know what kind of poo.

I actually don't remember. It was in the little dinosaur section of our local museum. But...would dinosaur poo last that long?! But then...if it's a fossil. I hope it was something decent. If it was just 50 year old dog poo, that's a little disappointing.

Thank you for sharing these pictures with us. Everyone looks so happy, and David looks so proud (and rightfully so!)

I approve of the centerpieces.

also, I think you're very pretty :)

David was really loving it, and I think he knew how proud the rest of us were of him. The centerpieces were all his stuff, btw (only he stole a few of my wolves).

And thank you!

That sukkah is so pretty! The one they put up near our playground for the Jewish university students is...not so nice (One of my three-year-old students thought "a tree fell on the roof!") I know that's not the point of it, but...

Those cookies look both adorable and tasty XD

Some are better than others. Ours is very nice--it has light-up grapes now.

They are, I'm having one now. It's a torah with silver sprinkles.
