Title: Once Upon The Sea
Rating: G
Pairing: Elizabeth/Will/Jack
Summary: What with what Jack and co. get up to, eventually they'll have a few legends about them.
Disclaimer: Pirates of the Caribbean and all associated thingies belong to Disney.
In nurseries and around the fire, they tell stories about a man whose love was kidnapped by evil creatures, and how he rescued her from the clutches of certain death. And they both lived happily ever after.
They tell stories about a woman who grew tired of her proper place in society and ran away with a man of the sea, beyond the reaches of corsets and formal balls. And they both lived happily ever after.
They tell stories about an honest blacksmith and a noble pirate who fought together, back to back and side by side, and formed a bond stronger than brotherhood. And they both lived happily ever after.
The story they rarely tell is the story of all three, and their tale of loyalty and betrayal, love and hate, how they ran circles about the seven seas and a thousand vengeful monsters until they wound up in each others' arms with the taste of sweat and seasalt on their lips.
Few nannies and old great-aunts whisper to their charges the tale of a rogue no prison could hold, a fighter no hardship could break, and a woman propriety had no claim on. If it was love, it wasn't the sort of love you could tell impressionable little boys and girls about.
It isn't right for a child to know that they practiced thievery and deception with the utmost joy, or that they lay together at night wrapped up in treasure and the night sky, became most intimate outside the union of marriage and all things decent. They were pirates, above and beyond all laws but those that they made for themselves.
And perhaps they did not live happily ever after (pirates, you know), but at least they had their freedom.
