Jul. 10th, 2005 05:14 pmSo my mom is big into working with NAMI(National Association for Mental Illness) for both personal and charitable reasons. She heard through some sort of connection that there's a couple near where I live with a mentally ill child, about eleven years. Mom and parents think I should meet the girl, perhaps we'll hit it off and be friends.
So I truck down to Panera with Mom and meet them. And the girl seems pretty nice. My guess is she's bipolar, perhaps a touch of high-functioning Aspergers. They haven't been able to get her meds figured out yet(and no one lecture me on meds vs no meds, this girl does need some), and she's a bit unusual, obviously different. Not stupid at all though.
I think we really clicked. Took her out to GameCrazy to get a Pokemon game, and she invited me to come golfing with her(turned her down, had stuff to do). I see a bit of myself in her when I was that age and in that condition. Mom and parents want me to maybe babysit her a bit, maybe play big sister/friend/mentor, something like that. I think I'd like that.
