Jul. 1st, 2005 06:20 pmSo this week I’ve been in family medicine(boring as eggs, for the most part) but I also spent a night in the trauma center. Was pretty interesting for a Wednesday, lots of car wrecks and such. Couple of things stuck out, though.
All right, so around one this guy comes in with neck pain. He’s admitted to being drunk and had traces of marijuana in his urine, and besides that is just acting generally silly. This dumbass decided, probably somewhere around his sixth beer, that it would be a good idea to go cliff diving in the middle of the night. So that’s headfirst off a 30 or 40 foot cliff into water that he can’t even see because it’s past midnight, and after that wandering around a bit with a sore neck before he walked himself to the ER. (Turned out to have a C6 fracture).
Another, which wasn’t as humorous, was a 21 or something year-old woman who had been badly beaten up. Stories went from “assaulted while breaking into a house” to “assaulted by her ex-boyfriend” with possibilities of sexual assault in there too. It was a bit disturbing, especially when she started screaming about not wanting the catheter in. Took a bit and a little pain medication to convince her it was a good idea.
I don’t think this is what I want to do for a living.
