Sometimes I wish I were born ten or so years before the original Transformers movie was released.

Seeing Unicron for the first time, feeling the horror and sadness of watching my favorite characters destroyed before my eyes, chuckling at the Junkions and Dinobots, sitting on the edge of my seat and wondering who would come out victorious in the battles between Primes and ‘trons. It must have been awesome. Knowing everything beforehand took the impact out of the movie, even though I still enjoyed it.

I suppose I’m being overly nostalgic or something, but it really would have been something to experience, I think.

Even though I already knew the entire plot practically by heart from fan-talk and fics, the sheer body count in the movie still surprised me the first time I watched it. They were just gunned down mercilessly, or thrown out of Astrotrain without a second thought or even vaguely elaborate death scenes. The pained “Brothers!” from one of the Decepticons (might have been Skywarp, I’m not sure) as he was pushed out of the hatch rather struck at me. If I had been seeing the movie with metaphorical virgin eyes, I’m sure I would have been in tears at least once. They could never get away with such carnage of beloved characters in today’s movies.

The Moral Messages were there without being banged in with a sledgehammer. The Autobots supported each other, made new friends across the worlds, and triumphed over evil through the power of their courage.

And the evil Galvatron wasn’t pure evil either. He wanted power, but was willing to ally himself with Hot Rod against a greater foe. The characters weren't so much propped up cardboard, they had more of a "human" aspect then those in many so-called adult movies that I've seen. No, I do not mean porn. I mean like PG13 movies and not-cartoons, which seem to be getting more inane every week.

The music was great, I think. Fit in with the pace of things, fast action or mourning or just plain scary. I liked the little details that were irrelevant to the major plot, like Starscream having to shoot his own foot to escape.

The movie moved pretty quickly too, and onward, an almost symbolic journey from a peaceful Earth to the belly of the Chaos God himself. I could find all kinds of symbolism in the Leadership Matrix alone(There's another thing. No way you could get away now with calling something the Matrix without the obligatory pop-culture reference, which would spoil the whole thing).

Makes me feel like I missed something really important, just by being born too late.

Everyone’s got their own opinion on the upcoming live action Transformers movie. Some seem to think that it will suck regardless of writing, actors, or animation, just because it is being done today and not two decades ago. Some are quietly resigning themselves to the fact that it might not be as good as they hope, but could still have some nice points. Some are being optimistic that it will be better then they had feared.

Here’s my take on the whole mess.

I hope it won’t be utterly kidified, but will attempt to give some depth to the Decepticon characters as well as the Autobots and humans. I hope it will have interesting plot twists. I hope that it is interesting and has good, well thought out writing. I hope it’ll be fun, with both dark parts and light-hearted banter.

Most of all, I hope that it will have giant transforming robots. Thank you.
