Behold! My first Serious Business post in my blog for Serious Business! I figure this'll keep the angst separate from the porn.

In other news, Disney has some questionable taste in jewelry. Because when I think of nooses, my first mental image tends not to be swashbuckling.

(Boots? Your package came in. I'll tear into it when I get home.)

...What the HELL? Who on earth would wear a ghastly symbol of a particularly disgusting method of ancient execution around their necks on a chain?

...oh. Hmm. I'm guessing this makes the Littlest Pirate the new Jesus.

This could be big. I'm seeing a whole line here; pendants shaped like electric chairs! Charm bracelets with tiny little needles, guillotines and stones on them! Tiaras shaped like bonfires, perhaps even with a decorative supposedly-a-witch in the centre, to really give it that Disney sparkle.

It's even more awkward considering the whole Jena 6 racism/lynching symbolism thing.

You could get a charm bracelet of execution methods. Or of the weapons in Clue, I think a noose was one of them.

*looks up Jena 6; winces*

Bad form, Mr Mouse.

Always wondered; if a gun, a knife or even a wrench were available in the building, who would go to the effort of using a rope? Garrotting is hard enough, but lynching someone with your bare hands?

Unless Ms Scarlet was into some snuff roleplay that went EXCEEDINGLY wrong.

Disney's not exactly got a stellar record when it comes to racial awareness.

I suppose there's always catching him from behind while he's standing on a chair or something....eh, I dunno.

[identity profile] tarajcl.livejournal.com 2007-11-30 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah. Love Disney, but it really doesn't notice when it's doing stuff like this. Although I would argue that the Sebastian one is reaching; the song aside, the guy was a neurotic workaholic.

*gets to the last one; looks up at Mickey with a hurt expression in my big black eyes. Which aren't actually black*

There is very little American media from the 40's and 50's that doesn't scare me to death, but honest-to-god, that expresion on Goofy's face? I have seen that exact same expression in cartoons of the old NP government leaders. Yowza.

One thing that irritates me; Mulan got her story from a Chinese myth. Aladdin got his story from a Middle-Eastern myth. And their new Black Princess? She gets an English myth set in an American town. Because Africa has no mythology. At all. *sideways glances at five nearest books* Either that, or Disney was terrified that its animators couldn;t actually draw traditional African dress without feeling compelled to add banana skin skirts and a coconut bra.

*huffs*

PotC also had its faults. I think the natives of somewhere-or-other were up in arms over the Pelegostos cannibal tribe in Dead Man's Chest. (You could have accused them of putting Tia Dalma as the magical helpful black person with no other point to her, but that theory got knocked out in the third movie so I'll give them that one.)

When it's not racially insensitive cartoons it tends to be whitebread or propaganda that makes you want to both laugh and kill things. The 50s were weird in a special way.

I suppose you could make a faint case for Rafiki having aspects of an African shaman, but that's still pretty reaching. *has read through Sundiata this semester and finds it quite awesome*

[identity profile] tarajcl.livejournal.com 2007-11-30 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Rafiki would be a great token African, given that he's the only one in TLK with the right accent. It's kind of a pity that he's... well, not a human.

-The 50s were weird in a special way.-

The Travelling Lobotomy Salesman. Those were the days. *laughs. And kills things*

-*has read through Sundiata this semester and finds it quite awesome*-

*envies; has been stuck with Catullus and the ways he liked to make refined intellectual fun of his enemies: 'DOOD, UR GAY!'*

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2007-11-30 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The traveling whatnow?

We read Catullus' stuff in Latin class. He was a bit of a prick.

Behold! The 'Lobotomobile'!

Warning: reading this made me physically ill. Humans really suck sometimes.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2007-11-30 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
*is also feeling ill* That's completely disgusting.

[identity profile] tarajcl.livejournal.com 2007-11-30 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad it's not just me. (Malpractise-related atrocities tend to skeeve me out more than anything else in the world.) On the plus side, he's dead now.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2007-11-30 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
And injuring your mind I consider to be the worst of medical crimes. I hope he died alone and in pain.

-And injuring your mind I consider to be the worst of medical crimes.-

What he did was kill them without stopping their hearts. And their families were left to deal with a drooling zombie imitation of their loved ones. Hell, he'd have done it to any member of my family; we've all got at least one pretty obvious abnormality (ADD, OCD, etc.)

(And on another weird tangent; this is why I cannot actually read about Zatanna anymore, or take seriously any story where the good guy erases the villain's memory, or alters his personality. It's also why the question of permanent 'reprogramming' in TF fiction has always induced shudders.)

Freaks me the fuck out too. It's completely inexcusable.

...here. Kittens.

Eeee! *snuggles* Would like to give you kitties, but cannot link images because I am thick. :(

But KITTIES! *luvs!*
