How I suffer for my work.

Today's xkcd strip is almost hitting too close to home to lessen the snifflings. And, apparently, the zambonis have decided to commit a bit of inter-altmode pranking on their nonsentient brethren.

Let me tell you, Internets, it is not easy writing a paper about post-Reformation Catholic/Protestant shitflinging. In the name of science and my final essay grade I have had not only to delve into the depths of Jack Chick's website but actually cite it on my paper in order to back up my points on modern anti-Catholic literature. Hopefully this will not cause my computer to damage itself in any way, as I'm already almost four pages in.

It's strange how a lot of my works seem to curve back around towards medieval/Renaissance/early modern European culture, especially the religious and supernatural aspects of it. I have no idea why, but I seem to find it an interesting period to play around in (hence the various wanderings and angstings of Brother Peter).

...although I try to sort of dance around the whole raping and pogroming aspects when possible. I mean, I know it's there, it's just really not what I want to focus on.

Oh my fuck! Chick Tracts are so ridiculously bizarre/hateful/dementedly funny it's unbelievable you can stand being on his website long enough to site it!

Usually I read the mockings of them at Jabberwock's blog, which is where I got the idea to put them in my paper. But I did need an original source on them to make sure I wasn't talking out of my ass in regards to the fact they think the papacy created Islam.

No, I am not kidding you.

I swear, they're like trolls but with Jesus. The whole thing's a big damn marketing scheme anyway, they sell those tracts in bulk.

I don't know about anywhere else but the Catholic Church here in Erie is up in arms about "The Golden Compass" and it's antiCatholic leanings. Or at least the leanings of the author. So much so, that in my daughter's dance class--which is heavily Catholic--they were warning her about the Atheist viewpoint of the movie. Which then lead to a discussion of everybody's religion which then got my daughter the suprised silence of 20 girls who couldn't believe daughter didn't profess to any religion (we're Atheist if you're wondering.) Needless to say, I was rather stunned and unhappy about the event.

I'll admit the Golden Compass supposedly gets a bit preachy (anti-preachy?) towards the end, but they've toned it down for the movie.

Besides, any kid too young won't even pick up on the symbolism and any old enough to get it should be old enough to think for themselves. People are getting silly.

This whole thing prompted a newspaper article quoting people who hadn't even read it. Those who did, including a priest, liked the books and felt that those old enough to get the symbolism were old enough to read it. I wasn't interested in seeing it, but now, I am. LOL But the girls were just throwing stuff out that they'd heard. They had nothing to base their opinions on except what they'd been told.

That's kids for you. They usually just parrot off what they hear from parents without caring about facts.
